Monmouthshire Building Society Youth Cricket
League
31st October 2011
The League Presentation
Evening brought this year's season to a
fitting end. Despite its last-minute
enforced rearrangement, it was well
attended. The presentations were made by
Huw Waters, John Glover and Harry Powell who
have figured prominently in recent reports
below.
Peter Hybart, Director of
Cricket for Cricket Wales, also attended and
presented trophies to the Gwent Girls U13
Squad who have become the inaugural Wales
U13 National Champions.

Mark Wallace
Will Bragg
It's been a great season for two Gwent Young
Cricketers - Mark Wallace and Will Bragg. They both topped the
1,000-run mark in the Championship and Mark has been given the
accolade of captaining his county for the coming season. He
has given great service to Glamorgan over the last twelve years and
during that time scored 10,634 runs, including 42 fifties and 11
centuries and taken 742 dismissals. Will, meanwhile, has been
rewarded with a two-year contract after scoring one century and
eight fifties in his first full season in the first team.

Huw Waters
It has not been such a happy time for some
other players, though. Huw Waters had a good start to the
season, bowling well and scoring his first first-class fifty, but
was sidelined with injury for the rest of the season after just
three games. He has spent his time being a great ambassador
for his county and, in particular, with the encouragement of young
cricketers, and his now raring to go for next season.

David Harrison
Mike Powell
Unfortunately, things have not gone well for
David Harrison, who has been forced to retire from the game through
injury. In a career that spanned twelve years he took a total
of 378 wickets, including ten five-wicket hauls, and also made seven
fifties and played for England U19s. Mike Powell, meanwhile,
has left Glamorgan after fourteen years during which he scored
17,970 runs in all forms of cricket, including 26 centuries and 94
fifties. We wish them both well for the future.

John Glover
We finish on a bright note, however, with a
Gwent Cricketer making his Glamorgan debut. John Glover played
in the last three Championship matches of the season taking a
four-wicket haul in the first innings of the match against Kent.
During this match John had the distinction of becoming the first
bowler to take a wicket in the Championship under lights!

Harry Powell
Finally, we would like to congratulate
16-year-old Harry Powell who has played for Glamorgan 2ndXI, Wales
Minor Counties and Wales U17s this season. To cap it all he was
named the Glamorgan Academy's Most Promising Player of the Year at
the county's recent end-of-season awards ceremony.
15 September 2011
Congratulations to Dewi Thomas of Machen
CC who has been selected as the mascot for this Friday's One Day

Berry, a member of the Gwent Girls U13 Squad, who had the honour
last year at the England v Australia One Day International.

Congratulations to John Davies who is being recognised for his contribution to youth cricket as part of the Sky
Recognition and Reward Scheme. In addition to being a member
of the Gwent Young Cricketers U10 and U11 management teams he
is always willing to help out at other age groups when required.
On top of that, he also serves as the Youth Organiser for Ebbw Vale
CC. He will receive his award on Sunday, 14th August at the
Glamorgan CB40 game at the SWALEC stadium so hopefully you will see
him on TV or, even better, go along and give him a cheer!

13th June 2011
There have been some exciting performances in
the Monmouthshire Building Society Youth Cricket League this
week. These include two centuries, from
Jake Watkins
(Newbridge) and Mike Hodson (Rogerstone), and no less than three
hat-tricks from Jack
Fitzgerald (Fugitives), Dan
Jones (Croesyceiliog) and
Jamie Thomas (Pentwyn). For full details of these and other
best performances, plus the results of the early rounds in the
Shield competition, click on the buttons at the top left of this
page.
30th May 2011
Most of us will be pleased to see the back of
May and look forward to a 'Flaming June'! However, quite a
number of matches have been played in the League and Shield and
eight
games have been played by our county sides. The most notable
of these was the U14 Welsh Championship match against North East
Wales. In it both Jack Thorpe Yon and Matt Jones scored
centuries. Jack's 172 was the highest in Gwent Young
Cricketers' history as was their opening partnership of 250.
In fact, this was Jack's third consecutive century for his county!

13th April 2011
We are now less than three weeks to the start
of our 2011 Youth Cricket season and I'm sure you are all -
players, parents, coaches, umpires, scorers, grounds and catering
staff, spectators etc - looking forward to it. The sound of
leather on willow, the smell of newly-mown grass, a tasty tea, the
patter of raindrops ...!
As many of you know there has been a
fundamental change in the way recreational cricket is being
organised in Wales with the formation of Cricket Wales to oversee
the whole process. Ted Tipper has been invited to serve as an
inaugural Director of the Board of this august body and is looking
forward to helping shape the future development of the game in the
Principality.
As far as Gwent is concerned, the League and
Shield competitions are going ahead as normal. However, there
have been some changes for our Gwent Young Cricketers county sides
as a result in the withdrawal of grant funding,
The website is now up and running. We
hope you all have an enjoyable summer playing, organising and
watching cricket. |
