YOUTH CRICKET LEAGUE 2010
Presentation Evening

U11 Premier
Division Joint Winners - Sudbrook A - with (l to r) Huw Waters, John Derrick and
Tom Baker
This year's
Presentation Evening was attended by around 700 players, parents and Club
coaches and officials. To cope with the numbers there were three
consecutive ceremonies at Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15. In total, there
were 410 individual trophies presented to players from 31 teams of 20 clubs.
The League Organiser, Ted Tipper, reported on a very good season with 420
matches played between the 98 teams. He also highlighted the success of
the Gwent Young Cricketers county teams whose players come from the League.
They were Welsh Champions at Under 11, Under 12 and Under 13 and semi-finalists
at Under 14 and Under 15 with the Under 10s winning two out of three games at
the Aberystwyth Festival.
The Gwent
Girls squad, meanwhile,
played creditably throughout the season in the League and three of them, Harriet
Coates, Ellis Pheasant and Nicole Reid, played in the Under 11 Championship
Final.
The
presentations of the trophies were made by John Derrick, Huw Waters and Tom
Baker. John played for Glamorgan CCC for nine years and then coached the
team during one its most successful spells when they won two one-day trophies
and were promoted to Division 1 of the County Championship. He is now the
Performance Manager for the Cricket Board of Wales. Huw played his youth
cricket in the League, for Newport, and represented England in the Under 19
World Cup before making his Glamorgan debut in 2005. Last year he made
eleven appearances in the County Championship for them. Tom Baker,
meanwhile, was playing in the League, for Blackwood, only a year ago.
Since then he has toured the Caribbean with the ECB Under 15 West Squad, been to
the United Arab Emirates with the Glamorgan Academy and played several games as
wicketkeeper for the Glamorgan CCC 2nd XI. These are just two of a dozen
players from the League who have represented Glamorgan at various levels during
the season.
In addition to
the shields for each of the Club's twelve Divisions and the trophies for the 410
individual players, two special presentations were made to Newport's Huw Morris
and Jack Thorpe-Yon for special performances playing for Gwent Young Cricketers.
In the Welsh Championships Under 12 Final, Huw took 5 wickets for 25 runs
including a hat-trick; a feat never achieved before in such an important match.
He was following in the footsteps of his namesake, Huw Waters, who once took 5
for 0 in a Championship Under 15 Semi-Final. Jack also achieved a first by
batting through the innings in the Welsh Championships Under 13 Final and
scoring 110 not out.
Summary of Season
This year’s League has now
been completed and it has turned out to be a special year for four clubs.
Sudbrook won both the Premier and Reserve Divisions at Under 11,
Llanarth did the same at Under 13 as did Chepstow at Under 15. Meanwhile,
Abercarn took a Divisional title in each of the three age groups having only won
two trophies previously in the history of the competition.
At Under 11, Sudbrook A
shared the title of the Premier Division with Newport, both having lost just one
game each and that to one another. Croesyceiliog A were Runners-Up but some
distance behind. However, they were much closer in the Reserve Division where
their B team was just one point behind champions Sudbrook B, having lost one
game more. Pentwyn won Division One East with Panteg A and Ponthir tied
together in second place. In Division One West, unbeaten Abercarn were worthy
winners having inflicted the only defeat of second-placed Blackwood.
At Under 13, the story of
the season was the tussle between Llanarth A and Newport A in the 20-Over East
Division who both remained unbeaten throughout the
season but the fates ensured they never met. It was agreed, therefore, that
their Shield Final should serve as a double-header and Newport’s victory ensured
the two teams shared the title, with Croesyceilog A in second place. The
20-Over West Division was the only one to complete all its games and Newbridge A
were worthy winners with just one defeat, which was to Ebbw Vale who finished as
Runners-Up. In the Pairs Divisions, Abercarn and Pontnewynydd shared the First
Division title, which was fitting as the match between them ended in a tie.
Abertillery was just one point behind having inflicted Abercarn’s only defeat of
the season. Llanarth B were the undefeated winners of the Reserve Division with
Usk B in second place.
At Under 15, Chepstow A were
clear Winners of the Premier Division with Ebbw Vale A the Runners-Up.
Meanwhile, their B team took the Reserve Division title ahead of Abercarn B.
Ponthir and Abergavenny shared the Division One East crown
and Sudbrook and Rogerstone couldn’t be separated behind them. Abercarn
A’s faultless campaign saw them lift the Division One West
title with Brynmawr and Newbridge tied together in second place.
The League
Presentation Evening will be held on 14th October; the team managers should have
full details of this.

Sudbrook
CC are closing in on an Under 11 double in the League. Their A team has ensured
the top spot in the Premier Division although Newport can still share it with
them if they win their last game. Meanwhile, their B team is also leading the
way in the Reserve Division with only Croesyceiliog B seemingly able to catch
them. In the Under 11 Division One East, Pentwyn have also secured at least a
share of the title with only Panteg A or Ponthir in a position to catch them.
Abercarn are in a very strong position in Division One West having gone ten
games without defeat although Blackwood still have a chance of levelling with
them.
At Under
13, Llanarth A have opened up a six-point gap over Newport A in the 20-Over East
Division. Both are unbeaten but Newport A have played two games less. In the
West Division, Newbridge A need one more victory to wrest the title from Ebbw
Vale A who have played all their matches. In the Pairs First Division, three
teams – Abergavenny, Abercarn and Pontnewynydd - are still in with a shout for
the title as are Llanarth B, Usk B and Chepstow B in the Pairs Reserve Division.
At Under
15, Chepstow A have moved up to challenge Ebbw Vale at the top of the Premier
Division, while Chepstow B are the first team in the League to claim outright
victory, in the Reserve Division where they have a thirteen point lead. In
Division One East, Abergavenny still have the chance to join Ponthir as
Joint-Champions and it’s all to play for in Division One West. Here Brynmawr
have a small lead but Abercarn A and Newbridge are still unbeaten below them
having played fewer games.
The most
exciting match of the week was in the U13 20-Over West Division between Machen
and Lisvane. With Lisvane needing five runs to win off the last two balls, the
penultimate ball was hit for four and the last ball clean bowled the batter to
ensure the match ended in a tie.
The team
performance of the week was, surely, that of the Newbridge Under 15 team who
bowled the opposition out for 13. Ben Wellington took five of these wickets but
Blackwood’s Kate Mainwaring bettered even this performance by taking six wickets
for no runs! The batting performance of the week was Malpas’ Scott Archer who
has three appearances below.

The recent spell of wet
weather, linked to the onset of the school holidays, has meant there have been
few changes in the League this week apart from in the Under 11 Divisions. In the
Premier Division, Sudbrook A have completed their programme with just one defeat
but victory in their last match will see Newport A share the title with them. In
Division One East, a late surge has seen Pentwyn take over at the top having
lost one game less than their closest rivals and in Division One West Abercarn
move into the lead after their eighth straight victory. In the Reserve Division,
Sudbrook B are forcing the pace on leaders Croesyceiliog B. They have each only
lost one game but Sudbrook B’s tied match may be the final deciding factor as to
who takes the title.
Changes at the top occurred in
only two other Divisions. In the Under 13 Pairs First Division, Abergavenny have
moved into the lead but Pontnewynydd are only one point behind with two games in
hand. In the Under 15 First Division East Ponthir have taken over at the top but
Abergavenny can join them if they win their remaining game.
While there have been some good
batting and bowling performances, such as Chepstow’s Ross Barnett with 84no
and Scott Bailey with 4 wickets for 1 run, it’s good to highlight two fielding
performances. Ponthir’s Oliver Waterhouse took three stumpings and a catch while
Rhys Sperring, of Sudbrook, made two run outs and took a catch, both in one
innings.

Things are
really hotting up in the League as we move into the last four weeks of the
season. At Under 11, Newport A and Sudbrook A remain locked together at the top
of the Premier Division, with just one game left each, while Croesyceiliog
retain their six-point lead in the Reserve Division. In Division One East,
Panteg A, Pentwyn and Ponthir are within one point of each other at the top and,
in the West Division, Blackwood move into a one-point lead with Abercarn still
unbeaten in second place.
At Under
13, in the 20-Over East Division, Llanarth A are still ahead of Newport A but
both are unbeaten and yet to face each other. In the West Division, Newbridge A
share the lead with Ebbw Vale A and would have been ahead of them but for their
exciting match with Lisvane ending in a tie. In the Pairs First Division,
Pontnewynydd are still unbeaten at the top with Abercarn and Abergavenny just
two points behind. Llanarth B are, like their A team colleagues, also undefeated
at the top of the Reserve Division.
At Under
15, Croesyceiliog have moved within two points of Ebbw Vale at the top of the
Premier Division and Abercarn B have moved into second place in the Reserve
Division but are still eleven points behind Chepstow B. Abergavenny and Ponthir
have identical records heading Division One East, with each having one game left
while, in Division One West, Abercarn A retain their unbeaten lead.
The
all-round performance of the week goes to Abergavenny’s Tristan Ashley-Jones.
Not only does the 11 year-old appear in the Under 11 and Under 13 Best Batting
Performances he but also had a five-wicket haul at Under 13. Sam Blakeney of
Blackwood, meanwhile, took four wickets in two separate matches, and Tane Basham
of Pentwyn scored 33 in just four overs at Under 11. However, this week’s
batting honours go to the Croesceiliog openers, Callum Reid and Lewis Pheasant
who put on a 213 undefeated opening wicket stand. Callum finished on 152no and
Lewis made 61no.

The recent
rainy spells have limited the number of matches played in the League so that
there have only been changes at the top of two Divisions. In the Under 11
Reserve Division, Newport C inflicted the first defeat of the season on
Croesyceiliog B and move into second place behind them. Meanwhile, in the Under
15 Division 1 West, Newbridge beat leaders Brynmawr to allow Abercarn A to take
over at the top.
The
playing performance of the week was undoubtedly the century scored by Jake

The
excitement is building in the Under 11 Divisions of the League. Sudbrook A have
edged ahead of Newport A in the Premier Division but both have still only lost
one game each. In Division I East, Panteg A have climbed three places to head
the table but Ponthir and Pentwyn have only lost one game each and have two
games in hand. There has been no change in Division 1 West but, in the Reserve
Division, Sudbrook B have also moved up three places though Croesyceiliog B are
still unbeaten ahead of them.
At U13,
Llanarth have opened up a nine-point lead over Newport A in the 20-Over East
Division but the title is likely to be decided in the two games coming up where
they play each other. The game of the week was clearly in the Pairs First
Division where the top two teams, Pontnewynydd and Abercarn, completed a tie.
There was no change in the 20-Over West Division and Llanarth B have
consolidated their position at the head of the Pairs Reserve Division after
their tenth game without defeat.
Only three
matches were played in the U15 Divisions, which didn’t affect the tables, except
that an eighth win for Chepstow B gives them a 13-point lead in the Reserve
Division.
Once
again, the batters dominated the best performances. At Under 13, the Usk pairing
of Ben Jones and Herbie Bone each have three entries for their batting while the
Chepstow A team amassed 141 without losing a wicket in the 20-Over East
Division. Ellis Ferriman (Sudbrook) and Matt Knight (Abergavenny) top-scored at
U11 and U15 respectively. For the bowlers, Usk’s Rhys Walton and Jack Farrant of
Chepstow each took 4 wickets while Sudbrook’s Tom Wetter took a hat-trick.

As we move
into the second half of the season the League has just ten teams with an
unbeaten record. Abercarn has gone seven matches without a loss in the Under 11
Division 1 West and Croesyceiliog eight in the Under 11 Division 1 West.
Meanwhile, at Under 13, Llanarth A and Newport A have recorded eighteen wins
between them in the 20-Over East Division but have yet to play each other. The
Llanarth B team is also undefeated in the Pairs Reserve Division as are
Abertillery and Pontnewynydd in the Pairs First Division. At Under 15, Newport
A, Abercarn A and Newbridge are also yet to record a loss but have only played a
relatively few number of games.
There has
been some hard-hitting in the League this week led by Ponthir’s Aled Burkitt and
David Hutchins of Abertillery who were both not out in the eighties.
Incidentally, Burkitt’s innings of 85 included 76 in boundaries and most of it
came in an unbeaten partnership of 101. Meanwhile, Marc McKay (Ponhir) hit 30 in
four overs at Under 11 while, at Under 13, Matthew Doyle (Llanarth) hit 36 and
Herbie Bone (Usk) made 33 each in four overs. Also, Harriet Coates scored 25 for
Gwent Girls in the U13 Reserve Division. The pick of the bowlers was
Dafydd Doolan (Abertillery)
who took 5 wickets while
Bryn Evans (Chepstow), J
Westwood (Panteg) and Ethan Shide (Blackwood) each took 4.

There was
a change at the top of just one of the twelve Divisions of the League this
week. In the U13 20-Over West Division, Newbridge A’s victory over Ebbw
Vale A sees them overtake them at the top. Also, there have been a few important results such as Pentwyn’s first
defeat, at the hands of Panteg, in the Under 11 Division 1 East.
The game
of the week was surely the Under 15 Division 1 West match between Brynmawr which
saw a total of 387 runs scored in 40 overs. Brynmawr amassed 222 for 1 thanks to
Richard Miles with 82no who was well supported by Nathan Davies (47no) and Ryan
White (42). In reply, Owen Davies led the reply for Pontllanfraith with an
unbeaten 95 but despite assistance from Ben Johnson (31) they came up well short
on 165 for 3.
This
week’s bowling honours go to 10-year old Ieuan Jones who took four wickets on
his debut for the Newbridge U13 20-over side. James Simkins also took a
four-wicket haul for Newport Fugitives in the Pairs Division.

There have
only been changes at the top of five of the twelve Divisions of the League,
despite over 30 games being played over the last week. In the Under 11 Division
1 East, Ponthir have taken a narrow one-point lead over Pentwyn although the
latter are still unbeaten and have played one game less. At Under 13, Newport A
have joined Llanarth A at the top of the 20-Over East Division, both being
unbeaten after six matches. In the Pairs First Division, Pontnewynydd chalked up
their sixth consecutive win to move ahead of Abercarn. At Under 15, Ebbw Vale A
have taken a one-point lead over Croesyceiliog A in the Premier Division while
Ponthir join Sudbrook at the top of Division 1 East with both having identical
records.
A look at
the Best Performances shows how much the long dry spell is favouring the
batters. This week’s particularly noteable performances include Chepstow’s Dan
Taylor with 31 in his four overs at Under 11. At Under 13, Aaron Lambert retired
on 30 twice and Jamie Harris was top scorer at Under 15 with 86. The most
remarkable performance of the week, however, was surely by Ponthir’s Aled
Burkitt in the U15 Division 1 East. With his team set just 67 runs for victory,
he scored 54 of them with 48 coming in boundaries! The best team performance was
undoubtedly Sudbrook A’s 170 for 0 in a 74-run victory in the 20-Over East
Division while the closest match was Rogerstone’s two-run victory over Newport
Fugitives in the U13 Pairs Reserve Division.

Newport A
and Sudbrook A are still locked together at the top of U11 Premier Division
having played each other twice in the last week and won one game each. Also at
U11, Pentwyn and Croesyceiliog B remain unbeaten at the top of Division 1 East
and the Reserve Division respectively. In Division 1 West, Abercarn are now
unbeaten in five matches, having inflicted the first defeat on second-place
Blackwood.
At Under
13, Llanarth A and Newport A remain undefeated in the 20-Over East Division
while Newbridge move into second place in the 20-Over West Division, just one
point below Ebbw Vale A. In the Pairs Division, Abercarn remain top but have
lost their unbeaten record after a one-run defeat by Abertillery, who are still
unbeaten in third as are Pontnewynydd in second. Llanarth B are unbeaten in
seven games in the Pairs Reserve Division with Chepstow B remaining in second
place.
At Under
15, Croesyceiliog A retain the leadership of the Premier Division despite going
down to their first defeat at the hands of Ebbw Vale A. Chepstow B still head
the Reserve Division with Abercarn B jumping two places to runners-up spot.
Sudbrook and Brynmawr lead the way in Divisions 1 East and West.
The
performance of the week must surely be Luke Challenger’s contribution to
Brynmawr’s ten-wicket win over Abertillery. He contributed 92no to his team’s
total of 123, finishing the game with a six! Then there was the Ponthir
partnership of 134 between Angus O’Brien (70no) and Aled Burkitt (60no) in their
victory over Undy & Magor. The pick of the younger batters was Pontnewynydd’s
Joshua Malson who totalled 53 in eight overs at U13. Two bowlers, Newport’s Huw
Morris and M Hodgson (Rogerstone) took 4 wickets in a game while Martin Evans
(Blackwood) took three wickets twice. Mention should also be made of two of our
Gwent Girls. Ffion Wynne made 36 for Newport at U15 and Rogerstone’s Christina
Shaw scored 16 at U11. There were also some good fielding displays by a number
of players with Elis Black (Pontnewynydd), Tom Simkiss (Ponthir) and
George Jones
(Ponthir) each being involved in four dismissals in a match.

is still is eagerly awaited. In the West Division, Ebbw Vale have moved ahead of

but they too lost their first match to the team behind them, Panteg. In Division
1 West, leaders Brynmawr also had their first defeat to Abercarn A who now share
second place with Newbridge.
As you can
see from the best performances, the batters are currently holding sway after the
long dry spell. In fact in the U13 20-Over Division, no less than 22 have
reached 30 and retired, with
Sam Haley (Machen)
and Hywel Rose (Llanarth) doing it twice each, yet no bowler has taken 3 wickets
in a match. The bowlers have been rather more successful at Under 11 with
Adaam
Hassan (Malpas) and J Allen (Machen) both taking four-wicket hauls.

Reserve Division. During this match, Croesyceiliog’s Callum Edwards took all
five of the Llanarth wickets to fall, including a hat-trick, in just 3 overs.
This was closely followed by Chepstow’s nine-wicket win over Usk in the U13
20-over East Division. Chepstow’s last batsman scored four off the last ball to
win the game. Kieran Fosh (Chepstow) also took five wickets at Under 15 and Glen

There have
been a few changes in some of the Divisions this week. At Under 11, Newport A
have now had four straight victories in the Premier Division to go clear by six
points while Ponthir take over at the top of Division 1 East. At Under 13, the
match in the Under 13-Over East Division between Llanarth A and Newport A is
eagerly awaited as they are both unbeaten in four matches. In the West Division,
Ebbw Vale and Newport Fugitives are locked together at the top but, crucially,

leaders of the Pairs First Division, unbeaten in three matches, while Llanarth B
have leapfrogged Chepstow B to go top of the Reserve Division.
At Under

Although it’s early days several teams are making an early
bid for the twelve divisional titles. At Under 11, Newport A and Sudbrook A are
both unbeaten in two games at the top of the Premier Division while Abercarn has
taken an early lead in Division I West as has Newport Fugitives in the East
Division. Meanwhile, the B teams of Chepstow and Croesyceiliog share the lead in
the Reserve Division. The match of the week was Sudbrook’s two-run win over
Croesyceiliog.
At U13, Newport A and Llanarth A are unbeaten in three
matches in the 20-Over East Division with Ebbw Vale unbeaten in two in the West.
There is a three-way tie at the top of the Pairs Division between Pontnewynydd,
Abercarn and Abertillery while Chepstow B lead the Pairs Reserve Division with
three straight wins. Here the most notable performance was Newbridge scoring 139
for the loss of just one wicket to overcome Brynmawr in the 20-Over West
Division.
Croesyceiliog A look to be the team to beat in the U15
Premier Division after two fairly convincing victories and Chepstow B are in a
similar position in the Reserve Division. Sudbrook and Brynmawr are both
unbeaten at the top of the East and West Divisions.
The Best Performances weren’t as spectacular as last week
but special mention should be made of Jamie Norman’s third 30 retired in as many
weeks, at U13 for Llanarth, while Callum Reid amassed 135 for once out, at U15
for Croesyceiliog. It wasn’t such a good week for the bowlers but four of them,
Ellis
Shipp (Newbridge), Matthew Brook (Ebbw Vale) and Jack Fitzgerald (Fugitives)
each took four wickets and 10 year-old Megan Simkins (Newport Fugitives) took 3.

The League
season is only two weeks old but there have already been two centuries scored
and one hat-trick. The highest score goes to Josh Harris (Panteg) with an
unbeaten 107 out of a total of 187 for 2 in the U15 First Division East. In the
same division, Scott Davies (Usk) took his hat-trick. The other centurion was
Sam Jackson (Chepstow) who made 102no as part of a record club opening
partnership 172 in the U15 Reserve Division. In the same match, his team-mate,
Sam Greening, took five wickets for just 2 runs in 4 overs.
At U13,
eight players reached 30 (after which they retire) in the 20-over Divisions. One
of these was Matt Doyle (Llanarth) who also top-scored in the Pairs Divisions.
For the bowlers,
Jake Lewis (Ebbw Vale) was
the most successful with five wickets and James Long (Llanarth) took four. The
team performance of the week was by Llanarth who amassed 171 runs without losing
a wicket while the match of the week was Abertillery’s one-run victory over
Newport B.
The U11s
are clearly still finding their feet with the three-wickets apiece by
Callum Stewart (Newport) and Ben Pask (Croesyceiliog) the only notable
performances.
