YOUTH CRICKET LEAGUE 2009

Croesyceiliog A, Joint Champions of the U11 Premier Division,
with Peter Hybart and Huw Waters
Presentation Evening
Around 600 people attended
the seventeenth annual Monmouthshire Building Society Youth Cricket League
Presentation Evening held at St Julian’s School, Newport. There were three
separate ceremonies, at Under 11, 13 and 15 levels, to cope with such a large
number. The organiser, Ted Tipper, reported that, despite the poor weather last
summer, a record number of 99 teams had played in 420.
The special guests for the
evening, who made the presentations of the Divisional Shields and individual
trophies, were Peter Hybart and Huw Waters. Peter has only recently joined the
Cricket Board of Wales as its new Director of Cricket and Huw is a former Gwent
Young Cricketer who played in the League in his youth and is now Glamorgan
county player.
Brief Review of Season
In the Under 11 Divisions,
the Premier Division was highly competitive with the title decided in the last
over of the final match of the season. Llanarth A shared the title, their third
in a row, with Croesyceiliog A while Chepstow A shared second place with Newport
A. In Division One East, another exciting finish saw Sudbrook defeat Abergavenny,
again in the last game of the season, to ensure they both shared the title with
Malpas just two points behind in second place. Ponthir can count themselves
unlucky having lost only one game but finding themselves unable to play all
their games. Division One West was particularly hard-hit by the weather, with
almost half the games called off. However, Blackwood managed enough wins to take
the title two points ahead of joint runners-up Abercarn and Machen. In the
Reserve Division, Llanarth B took the title just two points ahead of Chepstow B
having inflicted their opponent’s only defeat of the season.
At Under 13, Llanarth A
were worthy champions in the 20-Over East Division having won both their matches
with runners-up Chepstow A. Special mentions go to Undy & Magor who were the
only team in the whole League to play twelve matches. Also, to Newport A who
only managed to play 5 matches because of the weather and their long involvement
in the ECB Club Championship where they were crowned Welsh champions. In the
20-Over West Division, last year’s champions Ebbw Vale again dominated another
Division also hit by the weather, winning eleven straight victories to take them
to a ten-point lead over Abertillery A. In the Pairs First Division, Rogerstone
retained their title going through the season unbeaten. Lisvane came second with
their only defeat coming at the hands of the champions. Llanarth B and Ebbw Vale
B became joint champions of the Pairs Reserve Division, with identical records
and the title decider between them abandoned, and Chepstow B took the runners-up
spot.
At Under 15, the
Premier Division was the most closely fought in years with four teams in
with a chance right to the end as they continued to win and lose against each
other. Finally, Blackwood A were unable to play enough matches and Croesyceiliog
lost a crucial fourth match compared to the others’ three. In the end it was
Newport who took the title two points ahead of Chepstow A. In Division One East,
Chepstow B were convincing winners of having gone through the season unbeaten
with Usk just pipping Monkswood to the runners-up spot. In Division One West,
Newbridge took their first ever title in League with Blackwood B in second
place.

Report and Tables for Results Received by
22nd August
Things are
really hotting up in the League as it enters its last week. This is particularly
evident in the Leagues two Premier Divisions. At Under 11, the one remaining
fixture will determine whether Croesyceiliog will take the title outright or
share it with Llanarth A or if Chepstow A can pip Llanarth A to the runners-up
spot. At Under 15, it all hinges on Croesyceiliog’s fixtures with Chepstow and
Blackwood to determine who gets the title.
At Under
13, in the 20-Over West Division, Ebbw Vale have sealed the title with ten
straight victories. Meanwhile, in the Pairs First Division, Rogerstone A have
had a remarkable ten days winning six matches to take the League title with an
unbeaten record. Newbridge have been equally busy in the Under 15 Division 1
West moving into an unassailable lead. There have been no changes at the top of
the other Divisions and the last week promises to be a busy one, weather
permitting.
The
oustanding performers were the Rogerstone trio of Marc Lezar, Dan Lezar & L
Greening. The Lezar brothers scored eight innings over 20 between them, while
Mark and colleague Greening both took two four-wicket hauls and three catches in
a match. Also, Callum Herring of Blackwood scored 144 runs for once out in two
innings.

Report for Results Received by
15th August
The League is building up
to an exciting climax with just two weeks left. This is particularly the case in
the U11 Premier Division where Croesyceiliog A beat Llanarth A to join them at
the top but Newport A and Chepstow A are still within two points of them and
there are just two matches to play. In the Under 11 Division 1 West, Blackwood
lost their first game of the season to Tredegar, but are still in the driving
seat. In the U13 20-Over East Division, Undy & Magor become the first team in
the League to complete their season and have to wait and see if others will
overtake them in second place. In the U13 Pairs Division, Lisvane won the
top-of-the-table clash with Pontnewynydd to open up a slender lead.
In the U15 Premier
Division, Croesyceiliog A increased the pressure on leaders Newport by beating
them by just 5 runs. Chepstow B, meanwhile, have become the first champions
(subject to ratification) in the Under 15 Division 1 East. There have been no
changes at the top of the other five Divisions.
There were two hat-tricks
this week, from Richard Mollington (Llanarth) 3-4 at Under 11 and Ross Barnett
at Under 15, while
Dylan Stewart (Newbridge)
and Tudor Morgan-Huggett (Chepstow) both took four-wicket hauls.
Jamie
Baker (Newbridge) led the way for the batters with an unbeaten 63.

Few
matches were played in the League last week due to the poor weather and only
three Divisions saw any action. In the U11 Premier Division, Croesyceiliog beat
close rivals Chepstow by just 4 runs but these two teams, as well as Newport and
Llanarth, are all within four points of each other at the top. In the U13
20-Over Division Undy & Magor have moved into joint first place with Llanarth
but have only one game left compared with their rival’s four. In the U15
Division 1 East leaders Usk B and Chepstow B tied their top-of-the-table clash.
These were the first points Chepstow B have dropped this season but they still
look odds-on to take the title. In fact it is very unusual that, with just three
weeks of the season remaining, none of the titles have so far been decided. The
performance of the week was by 11 year-old Jack Turner who took 4 wickets for
runs against league leaders Undy & Magor.

The
scheduled fixture list has now been completed but there are still four weeks
left to catch up on the matches cancelled due to the weather. Things are hotting
up in all the Divisions but there is still all to play for. This is particularly
true in the Under 11 Premier Division where no less than four teams – Llanarth
A, Newport A, Chepstow A and Croesyceiliog A – are within two points of each
other at the top. Also at Under 11, Abergavenny lead the way in Division 1 East
but Sudbrook A and Malpas are just two points behind them. In Division 1 West,
which has been hardest hit by the weather, Blackwood, Machen, and Crumlin are
undefeated but there are many more games to be played. In the Reserve Division,
the title would seem to be between the Llanarth and Chepstow B teams who are
inseparable at the top, but Sudbrook B are still in with a chance.
At Under
13, it’s Llanarth and Chepstow again who are vying for the top spot in the
20-Over East Division while Ebbw Vale A seem to have the the 20-Over West
Division sewn up with eight straight victories. In the Pairs First Division,
Pontnewynydd and Lisvane are locked together at the top but an exciting finish
is brewing in the Reserve Division. Here the B teams of Llanarth, Chepstow, Ebbw
Vale and Croesyceliog are all within four points of each other.
At Under
15, Newport A appear favourites in the Premier Division but they still have to
play their closest rivals, Croesyceiliog A, and Blackwood A are still in with a
shout. Chepstow B seem to be heading for the Division 1 East title if they can
maintain their unbeaten record. Blackwood B and Machen lead the way in Division
1 West but several other teams could catch them if they can play enough games.
The
batting performance of the week came from Ebbw Vale’s Robson Blake who blasted
114 before retiring with Marc Lezar, of Rogerstone, scoring an equally
impressive 57 in just four overs at Under 13. Meanwhile, the pick of the bowlers
were Jack Clarke (Pentwyn), Zac Agnew (Ebbw Vale)
and Lewis Bignall (Machen) who each had four wicket hauls. The best all
round performance in a match was Newbridge’s Jamie Baker who took a remarkable 4
wickets for 0 runs against Machen and followed this up with an unbeaten 41.

There have been some
terrific team and individual performances in the Monmouthshire Building Society
Youth Cricket League this week. In the Under 11 Premier Division, Chepstow A
inflicted Llanarth A’s first defeat of the season by just two runs to remain the
only unbeaten side in the division. In the Under 11 Division 1 East, Sudbrook A
lost their unbeaten record to Ponthir by the same margin and are now level at
the top with Abergavenny. Meanwhile, Machen and Blackwood are joint leaders in
Under 11 Division 1 West while Chepstow B are just ahead of Llanarth B in the
Reserve Division. All of these four teams are yet to taste defeat.

on the West Division after five straight victories. In the same division,

again retiring, and Newbridge bowled out Newport Fugitives for 26. In the Pairs

unbeaten below them.
At Under 15, Newport have

leading Division 1 West. This division saw the highest score of the season which
was Crumlin’s 241 against Rogerstone B with Simon Veall scoring a remarkable 153
In addition to Simon Veall,
three other batsmen - Josh Harris (Pentwyn), Ed Fletcher (Abergavenny), and Tom
Smith (Chepstow) – also scored centuries. Josh in fact totalled 205 runs in 3
innings for just once out. Darnell Taylor-Wood (Newport) topped the U11 batting
with 35 while Lewis Jones (Abertillery) retired at 30 in two
innings in the U13 20-Over Divisions and Matthew Doyle (Llanarth) top-scored in

After the
recent spell of good weather the Monmouthshire Building Society Youth Cricket
League is beginning to take shape. At Under 11, Chepstow A are unbeaten at the
top of the Premier Division after three straight wins but Croesyceiliog A and
Llanarth A are also unbeaten after two. In Division 1 East, Sudbrook are
unbeaten after four matches with Malpas and Newport just two points behind. The
West Division, hit hard by the early season rain, sees Machen and Crumlin share
the lead with two wins each. The U11 Reserve Division is currently a two-horse
race with Llanarth B and Chepstow B both unbeaten after four matches. There is
an identical situation in the U13 20-Over East Division with the same two clubs
involved. Once again the West Division has been hardest hit by the weather with
Ebbw Vale A and Newbridge tieing at the top with two wins apiece.
In the U13
Pairs League, Lisvane are clear leaders with four wins out of four in the First
Division. In the Reserve Division, Newport Fugitives B are top having, quite
remarkably, not missed a game so far but Llanarth B are only one point behind.
Croesyceiliog A have had a storming start to the U15 Premier Division with four
straight wins but Newport are just behind them, unbeaten in three. Meanwhile,
their B team heads the Division 1 East with Ebbw Vale, Monkswood and Chepstow B
in close pursuit. In Division 1 West, Machen have taken an early lead but
Newbridge and Blackwood B are just one point behind.
As in
previous weeks, the bat has dominated the ball as the best performances below
show. The batter of the week was 14 year-old Callum Reid of Croesyceiliog U15
who scored a total of 169 in two innings. For the bowlers, Davey Mulroy, also
Croesyceiliog, took seven wickets in two matches and Panteg’s Joel Williams took
a hat-trick.

The pick
of the batters last week were Robson Blake of Ebbw Vale who was just two short
of his century when the innings closed and Rogerstone’s Marc Lezar who scored a
remarkable 50 in just four overs. The bowlers had a lean time of it although
Hamish Matthews of Llanarth did take a hat-trick which was particularly
remarkable because each wicket was a stumping by Peter Downing. In fact, it was
a good week for wicketkeepers and especially
David Richards of
Croesyceiliog who made
four stumpings and was involved in a run-out in the one match.

The Monmouthshire Building Society Youth Cricket League is finally
getting into its stride for the 2009 season after the recent spell of
good weather. However, a quick glance at the tables will show how the
poor weather in early May has affected many matches, especially those
played in the west of Gwent. However, this hasn’t prevented five teams –
Sudbrook U11A, Llanarth U11B, Llanarth U13A, Lisvane U13B and Newport
U15 – from playing and winning three matches to lead their respective
Divisions. It is all the more surprising, however, that in terms of
individual performances the batters have out-performed the bowlers.
The first century of the season goes to Aled Liddington (Ebbw Vale Under
15) while Matt Doyle (Llanarth) gets a mention in the Under 13 Best
Performances no less than four times. In his four innings he scored a
total of 133 runs without losing his wicket. Not to be outdone, the
bowlers have also been putting in some good Individual performances
especially in the Under 13 Divisions. Sam Greening (Chepstow) leads the
way with ten wickets in just two innings while Joe Shephard (Lisvane),
Elliot McKenzie (Undy
& Magor) and Will Evans (Llanarth) have each taken a hat-trick.
The ‘matches of the week’ were in the Under 11 Reserve Division, where
Newport C beat Lisvane B off the last ball, and in Under 15 First
Division East, where Llanarth just failed to reach Ebbw Vale’s 172 for 1
by 12 runs.
