YOUTH CRICKET LEAGUE 2008
Presentation
Evening
Over 600
people attended this year’s Presentation Evening held at St Julian’s School,
Newport; There were three separate ceremonies, at Under 11, 13 and 15 levels, to
cope with such a large number. The organiser, Ted Tipper, reported that, despite
the poor weather this summer, a record number of 98 teams had played in 442
matches, an average of 9 per team. He also stated how the attendance of teams
from half of the clubs in the League at the event demonstrated the strength in
depth across the League.
The
success of the League in producing high class cricketers was highlighted with
one-third of the current Glamorgan squad having graduated from it – David
Harrison (Panteg), Mark Wallace & Mike Powell (Abergavenny), Ryan Watkins & Kyle
Tudge (Blackwood), Huw Waters (Newport/Usk), and Willie Bragg (Malpas/Panteg).
In addition, Ollie James (Usk), Najaf Iqbal & Simon Church (Newport), Jon
Denning (Abergavenny) and James Reid (Croesyceiliog) had all played for the
Glamorgan Academy during the season and Max Scarr had taken a five-wicket haul
for Glamorgan U17s. Also, around one-third of the Welsh youth squad players play
in the League.
In the
Under 11 Divisions, Premier Division champions Llanarth A repeated their feat of
last year of going through the season undefeated with Croesyceiliog A taking the
runners-up spot. Usk A were also undefeated in Division One East. Their defeat
of Ponthir by just seven runs proved crucial as it enabled Usk A to win the
Division by one point. Ponthir retain the runners-up spot they took last year.
Division One West was one of the divisions hardest hit by the weather. Lisvane
took the title with just one defeat in nine games. Newbridge were runners-up
with one defeat in seven but, crucially this was against Lisvane. In the Reserve
Division, Usk B and Sudbrook B had identical records to become joint champions
with Llanarth B as runners-up with just one defeat more.
At Under
13, Chepstow A took the 20-Over East Division title with just one defeat in
twelve matches which was to second place Croesyceiliog A who, defending the
title, had one defeat more. In the 20-Over West Division defending champions,
Blackwood A, also had to settle for second place behind champions Ebbw Vale A
who went through the season undefeated. In the Pairs First Division, Rogerstone
A went one better than last year by going through the season unbeaten to take
the title with Abercarn and Panteg sharing the runners-up spot. Chepstow B were
also unbeaten in the Pairs Reserve Division and finished as champions just one
point ahead of Rogerstone B.
In the
Under 15 Divisions, last year’s runners-up in the Premier Division, Chepstow,
took the title with just one defeat. They beat last year’s winners, Newport,
into second place by 6 points. In Division One East, Ebbw Vale A retained the
title with just one defeat while Chepstow B took second place. In Division One
West, no less than three teams, Lisvane, Rogerstone A and Rogerstone B shared
the title. Blackwood, who only lost one match but only managed to play eight
against the others’ twelve, finished as runners-up.
Two
individuals who have strong links with youth cricket in Gwent, and are at the
opposite ends of their cricketing careers, made the presentations. Graham
Burgess, the ex-Somerset player, has just retired from being a first-class
umpire after five decades of involvement with the first-class game and is
looking forward to devoting more of his time to the development of our young
players. Meanwhile, Imran Hassan is only just starting out his career. Last
year, the 16 year-old was receiving a winner’s trophy as a member of Newport’s
U15 team and this year he has been given the accolade of Glamorgan Academy
Player of the Year and is celebrating the award of a development contract for
the county for 2009.

Final Report for
Three Weeks Ending 30th August
The League
has now been completed for this season. A total of 442 matches were played,
despite the poor weather throughout the summer, meaning that each of the 98
teams played an average of just under nine games out of a maximum of twelve.
This is testament to the determination of the many club coaches and managers
determined not to let the weather get the better of them. Also, the fact that
the eleven titles were won by seven different clubs shows the strength in depth
in the League.
In the
Under 11 League, Premier Division champions Llanarth A repeated their feat of
last year of going through the season undefeated with Croesyceiliog A taking the
runners-up spot.
Newbridge took runners-up
position with one defeat in seven but, crucially this was against Lisvane. In
the Reserve Division, Usk B and Sudbrook B had identical records to become joint
champions with Llanarth B as runners-up with just one defeat more.
In the
Under 13 League, Chepstow A took the 20-Over East Division title with just one
defeat in twelve matches which was to second place Croesyceiliog A who,
defending the title, had one defeat more. In the 20-Over West Division defending
champions, Blackwood A, also had to settle for second place behind champions
Ebbw Vale A who went through the season undefeated. Conversely, in the Pairs
First Division, Rogerstone A went one better than last year by going through the
season unbeaten to take the title with Abercarn and Panteg sharing the
runners-up spot. Chepstow B were also unbeaten in the Pairs Reserve Division and
finished as champions just one point ahead of Rogerstone B, although the latter
had played three more games.
In the
Under 15 League, last year’s runners-up in the Premier Division, Chepstow, went
one better this year by winning the title with just one defeat. They beat last
year’s winners, Newport, into second place by 6 points. In Division One East,
Ebbw Vale A retained the title with just one defeat while Chepstow B took second
place. In Division One West, no less than three teams, Lisvane, Rogerstone A and
Rogerstone B shared the title. Blackwood, who lost just one match but only
managed to play eight against the others’ twelve, finished as runners-up.
The League
Presentation Evening will take place on Thursday, 2nd October.

Report for Two
Weeks Ending 23rd August
There is little
to report as few games have been played in the last two weeks. The main
changes were in the Under 13 20-Over West Division where Ebbw Vale A beat close
rivals Blackwood twice to take a commanding lead. There is just one week left
now to play rearranged matches.
Report for Two
Weeks Ending 9th August
Champions-elect Llanarth A are thirteen points clear at the head of the Under 11
Premier Division with Newport A favourites to take second spot if they can catch
up on the games played by the two teams above them. There is a similar situation
in the Under 11 Division One East, where Ponthir are in the driving seat but
could be overtaken if unbeaten Usk A can play their games in arrears. Lisvane
have moved ahead of Newbridge at the top of the Under 11 Division One West,
while Usk B and Sudbrook B are fighting it out for the Under 11 Reserve Division
title with Llanarth B waiting to pounce should either slip up.
At Under
13, Llanarth A lost the number one spot in the 20-Over East Division when they
failed by just one run to reach the Newport A score of 113 for 7 and then lost
to Chepstow A. Chepstow A are now looking favourites for title unless unbeaten
Croesyceiliog can play their outstanding games in the next three weeks. In the
West Division, the matches between the two unbeaten teams, Blackwood and Ebbw
Vale A are eagerly awaited and likely to decide the title. Meanwhile, Rogerstone
A and Chepstow B, both unbeaten, look to be favourites to win the Pairs First
and Reserve Divisions respectively.
Chepstow A
are champions-elect of the Under 15 Premier Division, with three teams –
Newport, Sudbrook and Croesyceiliog – in the race for runners-up spot. Ebbw Vale
look well placed to take the Under 15 Division 1 East title while Rogerstone A
are in the driving although they lost to second-place Lisvane. However, four
teams could overtake them (including their B team!) if they can win enough of
their remaining matches.

Report for Week Ending 26th July
The Monmouthshire Building
Society Youth Cricket League has now finished its scheduled fixture list but
there are still five weeks left for clubs to play rearranged matches.
At Under
11, in the Premier Division, Llanarth A have just one game left to play and a
win will see them go through the whole season undefeated, with Newport A looking
favourites for runners-up spot. Ponthir still head Division One East with only
Usk looking likely to catch them if they can play all their games. In Division
One West, Lisvane defeated Newbridge to join them at the top with just one
defeat each and, in the Reserve Division, Usk B have lost their unbeaten record
which has kept the hopes of Sudbrook B and Llanarth B alive. This came about
when, with the scores level, Usk tried for a run off the last ball to win only
to suffer a run-out and lose the game to Newport B.
At Under
13, Llanarth A and Chepstow A have equal records at the top in the 20-Over East
Division as do Ebbw Vale A and Blackwood A in the West Division. Rogerstone A
continue to lead the Pairs First Division, unbeaten in ten matches. In one
match, they totalled 182 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 16 overs. Chepstow B
take over at the top of the Pairs Reserve Division, unbeaten in seven matches.
The
excitement is really mounting in the U15 Premier Division with four teams within
two points at the top. In an exciting game, Chepstow needed two to win off the
last ball but only managed one to tie the game with Newport. However, they are
still favourites to take the title as are Ebbw Vale A in the Under 15 Division
One East. In this Division, Chepstow’s Alun Jones and Ross Hoare shared a fifth
wicket partnership of 115 after coming together at 6 runs for 4 wickets. In
Division One West, Rogerstone A still lead but there are three teams within
three points of them.

Report for
Week Ending 19th July
The
biggest movers in the League this week were in the Under 15 Division One West,
where Rogerstone’s A team climbed from fifth to top, just above their B team in
second place. Also at Under 15, Ebbw Vale retain the leadership of Division One
East while there is a three-way tie between Chepstow A, Sudbrook A and
Croesyceiliog at the top of the Premier Division. Chepstow A lost their first
match, to Croesyceiliog, but still remain favourites as they have played two
games less than the other two.
At Under
13, Rogerstone are also excelling with their A team heading the Pairs First
Division, unbeaten in nine matches, and their B team sharing the lead of the
Reserve Division with Ebbw Vale B after beating them this week. However,
Chepstow B are still unbeaten, just one point behind, and have played three
games less. The Llanarth and Chepstow A teams share the leadership of the
20-Over East Division with identical records; Croesyceiliog are still unbeaten
but have a backlog of matches. Meanwhile, the A teams of Ebbw Vale and Blackwood
are both unbeaten joint leaders of the 20-Over East Division.
Llanarth
are still favourites to win the U11 Premier Divison title while Ponthir have
strengthened their position at the top of Under 11 First Division East. Usk A,
the only team to beat them, could catch them but have played four games less.
Also at Under 11, Newbridge and Usk B remain at the top of First Division West
and the Reserve Division, both unbeaten.
The
‘Player of the Week’ must surely be Mike Jones of Monkswood. Not only did he
reach the retiring score of 30 in three innings in the Under 13 20-Over
Division, but also scored 40 for his team’s Under 15 side.

Report
For Week Ending 12th July
The Monmouthshire Building Society Youth Cricket
League has now finished its scheduled fixture list
but there are still five weeks left for clubs to
play rearranged matches.
The poor
weather last week saw just fifteen matches played in the League and these only
affected the leading positions in three Divisions but included two memorable
matches. In the Under 11 Division One West Newbridge moved to the top, after
their sixth straight win. Meanwhile Rogerstone A won the battle of the two
unbeaten teams in the Under 13 Pairs First Division by just one run. Two wins by
Pentwyn in the Under 15 Division One East see them move into second place but
still some way behind leaders Ebbw Vale.
There was
a truly remarkable individual performance in the Under 13 20-Over West Division,
11 year-old Ben Wellington took eight wickets for no runs (including a
hat-trick!). In the U15 Premier Division, Newport posted a very creditable 150
for 7 but Connor Miles (73no) and 13 year-old Callum Reid (55no) ensured
Croesyceiliog won by ten wickets with a 151-run opening stand.

Report
For Week Ending 5th July
The
League enters the second half of the season with everything still to play for in
every Division. At under 11, Llanarth and Ponthir remain clear leaders in the
Premier and One East Divisions but Croesyceiliog and Usk A have moved into the
two runners-up spots. Lisvane still head Newbridge in Division One West while
Usk B move to the top of the Reserve Division having defeated previous leaders,
Sudbrook, to remain unbeaten in seven matches.
At Under
13, Chepstow are clear leaders of the 20-Over East Division while Sudbrook move
into second place ahead of Croesyceiliog who are unbeaten but have a backlog of
games. Ebbw Vale A and Rogerstone A remain top of the 20-Over West and Pairs
First Divisions. In the Reserve Division, unbeaten Chepstow B defeated
Rogerstone B and joined them and Ebbw Vale B in a three-way tie at the top.
At Under
15, Chepstow A have increased their lead after their sixth straight win with
only Newport currently looking likely to catch them. In Division One East, Ebbw
Vale A have stretched their lead to seven points. In Division One West,
Rogerstone B still lead despite defeat by Blackwood who remain unbeaten but have
only played four games so far this season.

Report for
Week Ending 28th June
Rogerstone currently lead
two U13 Divisions in the Monmouthshire
Building Society Youth Cricket League. Their
A team top the Pairs First Division unbeaten
in seven matches although they face a tough
challenge from Abercarn who are also
unbeaten. Rogerstone B, meanwhile, lead the
Pairs Reserve Division. Also at Under 13,
Chepstow A retain the leadership of the
20-Over East Division while Ebbw Vale A take
over at the top of the 20-Over West
Division.
At Under 11, there is no
change in the leadership of the Premier and
Division One East Divisions where Llanarth A
and Ponthir remain in charge. Lisvane go to
the top of Division One West, despite losing
their unbeaten record to Crumlin, while, in
the Reserve Division, Sudbrook B also lost
their first game, to Newport, but stay at
the top. Usk B, now the only unbeaten team
in the Division, are breathing down their
necks.
At Under 15, Chepstow A,
the only unbeaten team, move to the top
while Ebbw Vale have a one-point lead in
Division One East. Rogerstone B complete a
good week for the club by topping Division
One West.
The bowling performances
of the week were the hat-trick of Harry
Southall (Ponthir), at Under 11, and Ebbw
Vale’s Lewis Evans with four wickets in one
over. The batting honours go to Darnell
Taylor-Wood (Newport) and Matthew Doyle
(Llanarth) who both reached 30 in their four
overs at Under 11, Ebbw Vale’s
Tom Lynch and William Birch
who did the same at Under 13 and Newport’s
Tom Carter with an unbeaten 68 at Under 15.

Report for
Week Ending 21st June
As the Monmouthshire Building
Society Youth Cricket League approaches the halfway
point of the season just seven teams, who have
played five games or more, remain undefeated. One of
these is Llanarth A, in the Under 11 Premier
Division, who have now beaten all their opponents to
take a ten-point lead at the top. Evidence of their
dominance can be seen in the 150 runs they scored in
sixteen overs against Sudbrook for the loss of just
two wickets. Their team includes three Welsh players
– Gareth Ansell, Jamie Norman and George Lewis. The
other Under 11 Divisions are much closer, however.
Ponthir still lead Division One East but, crucially,
have lost to Usk who are still unbeaten in second
place. Lisvane and Newbridge are both unbeaten at
the top of Division One West with this week’s match
between the two eagerly awaited. Sudbrook B remain
unbeaten in the Reserve Division with Ebbw Vale B
and Llanarth B just two points behind while Gwent
Girls, the only all-girl team in the League, have
won their first match.
At Under 13, Chepstow A have
climbed five places to take over the leadership of
the 20-Over East Division with Croesyceiliog A
unbeaten in second place just one point behind and
Ponthir and Sudbrook a point behind them. Blackwood
A have gone to the top of the 20-Over West Division
which has been affected more than most by weather
conditions this season. In the Pairs First Division,
Rogerstone A are unbeaten in six matches but there
are three clubs – Blackwood B, Pontnewynydd and
Abercarn – within three points. There is no change
in the Pairs Reserve Division with Ebbw Vale B
leading Rogerstone B by two points.
At Under 15, there is a three-way
tie at the top between Croesyceiliog A, Chepstow A
and Sudbrook but Chepstow A have played two games
less and already beaten the other two. Newport’s
unbeaten run came to an end with a ten-run defeat by
Chepstow in a game that saw 278 runs score in forty
overs. This match also saw two century partnerships
between Rhydian Knox and Elgan Alderman for Newport
and Matthew Kinchin and Elliott Ferriman for
Sudbrook. It’s very competitive in Division One East
where Llanarth lead Ebbw Vale by one point and three
other teams are just three points away. In Division
One West, Rogerstone B lead Pontnewynydd but several
teams below them must fancy their chances if they
can catch up on their matches played.
The batting performances of the
week were Matt Doyle’s 36 in his four overs in the
U11 Premier Division and Newport’s Rhydian Knox
scoring 80 to continue his impressive run of form in
the Under 15 Premier Division. Meanwhile five
bowlers took four wickets Hywel Rose (Llanarth) at
Under 11, J Mullen (Sudbrook), Daniel King
(Newport) and Josh Tregaskes
(Chepstow) at Under 13 and Sam Lewis at Under 15.

this week as the pace is beginning to hot up in
response to the recent good spell of weather. Both
Connor Williams of Crumlin and Croesyceiliog’s Alex
Davis achieved this rare feat. At Under 11, Llanarth
A have extended their lead in the Premier Division
to nine points with their sixth straight victory. In
Division One East, Ponthir have moved to the top but
Malpas and Usk A are within two points of them.
Lisvane are six points clear in Division One West
after five straight wins but Newbridge are also
unbeaten behind them having played two games less.
In the Reserve Division, Sudbrook B continue to set
the pace, unbeaten in five matches. The performances
of the week took place in the match between
Rogerstone and Lisvane in Division One West where
Dan Lezar (Rogerstone) scored 34 in his four overs
and Sakid Ikram (Lisvane) took 4 wickets for 14
runs.
At Under 13, Croesyceiliog remain
unbeaten at the top of the 20-Over East Division
with Ponthir one point behind while Machen A move
into the lead in the 20-Over West Division.
Pontnewynydd move to the top of the Pairs First
Division with three other teams – Blackwood B,
Rogerstone A and Abercarn – all within three points
of them. Ebbw Vale regain the leadership of the
Pairs Reserve Division. In a remarkable match in the
20-Over East Division, Chepstow amassed 171 runs for
the loss of just two wickets, with twins Tudor and
Tyler both retiring after reaching thirty along with
Joe Bird, and then bowled out previously unbeaten
Llanarth for 36 of which Jake Groves scored 21!
Apart from the 20-over players who retired on
reaching thirty, the week’s best batting performance
was Ebbw Vale’s William Birch with 35 in his four
overs while eleven year old Ben Wellington (Newbridge)
takes the best bowling with a remarkable 5 wickets
for 3 runs.
At Under 15, Croesyceiliog A
remain at the head of the Premier Division having
played three games more than Newport and Chepstow A
who are both unbeaten behind them. In a high scoring
match, Newport posted 153 for 1 while Ponthir
totalled 125 for 2 in reply. In Division One East,
the two Ebbw Vale teams are first and third,
separated by Llanarth who are still unbeaten.
Rogerstone B move to the top of Division One West
ahead of Pontnewynydd and Lisvane. This week’s best
batting performance was Newport’s Rhydian Knox with
88no, following two centuries in the League and
Shield, closely followed by Alex Cope with 74. Three
wickets for 3 runs, by Croesyceiliog’s Alex Davis,
