Over 600 people attended this
year’s Monmouthshire Building Society Youth Cricket
League Presentation Evening held at St Julian’s
School, Newport. The organiser, Ted Tipper, reported
that, despite the poor weather, a record number of
101 teams had played in 433 matches, an average of 8
per team. He also stated how the attendance of teams
from 19 of the 28 clubs at the event demonstrated
the strength in depth across the League. The evening
consisted of three separate presentations at Under
11, 13 and 15 levels.
At Under 11, Llanarth A picked up
their first-ever title in style. They became
champions of the Premier Division with twelve
straight victories. Chepstow A were clear runners-up
with two defeats. Undy & Magor, also first-timers,
took the Division 1 East title, with an unbeaten
record, ahead of Ponthir. In Division 1 West,
Abertillery and Crumlin had identical records,
including beating each other, to become joint
champions with Newbridge just two points behind. In
the Reserve Division, Chepstow B and Llanarth B
couldn’t be separated at the top with identical
records, followed by Sudbrook B.
At Under13, this season saw the
introduction of two 20-Over Divisions. Croesyceiliog
A just beat Newport A to win the East Division while
an unbeaten Blackwood A finished well ahead of
Pentwyn A in the West. The Pairs Divisions were
dominated by Ebbw Vale; their A team won the First
Division and the B team won the Reserve, with
Rogerstone A and Malpas B respective runners-up.
At Under 15, Newport retained the Premier
Division with Chepstow as runners-up. Ebbw Vale won
Division 1 East, with an unbeaten record, ahead of
Monkswood and Panteg B. In Division 1 East, Tredegar
were also undefeated champions finishing just one
point ahead of runners-up Lisvane.
Glamorgan opening bowler, David
Harrison, who played in his youth in the League for
Panteg, made the presentations. He was Glamorgan
Young Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons
and awarded his county cap in 2006. Unfortunately,
he missed the whole of this summer through injury
and everyone wishes him well for next season.
